5 Spring 2024 Fashion Trends Worth Investing In (+ where to shop them!)
Let’s talk spring fashion for 2024
Trends come and go at an unnervingly fast pace these days. And when it comes to figuring out how you want to dress for the season, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed with the plethora of trends to choose from.
My biggest tip – pick trends that can become timeless. But how do I do that?
These are the three things to ask whenever you shop:
Think about how they help you achieve your unique style language
Think before you buy and wait before purchasing to see if you truly want it
And lastly, determine what the purpose the trend would serve in your wardrobe while asking yourself if you really need it or just want it
But with so many trends being tossed around, who do I trust when identifying the true trends of the season?
TikTok is for microtrends whereas renowned fashion houses and the long-standing fashion publications are for true style. That’s why every season I turn to the runways as well as credible fashion publications like Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Refinery29, and Glamour to research trends and pieces for clients – and myself of course.
Below are trends that I feel not only have the potential to find a home in almost everyone’s wardrobe, but will also stick around past the spring season.
5 Spring 2024 Fashion Trends that Will Last Past the Season
1. Animal print
No, not in the mob-wife aesthetic way.
Specific animal prints ebb and flow continuously in and out of season as time goes on. Why? Because it can act as a neutral.
Animal print is an easy way to add dimension or a pop of color while staying in the neutral territory.
Cheetah/leopard is raging right now and the mixed shades of brown, beige, and black make it very versatile and easy to incorporate.
These pants from Reformation are super versatile. You can dress them up dress them down with a graphic tee and chunky loafers or for transitional spring days with a black cardigan, white tee, and some ballet flats. You can also dress them up with a mock neck knit and some pointed toe slingbacks or an off the shoulder top and some strappy mules.
Not ready to commit to a full animal print pant? Try a bag, specifically from your local thrift, Depop, Poshmark, ThredUp.
2. Mary Jane Ballet Flats
When I first saw ballet flats on the rise, I really didn’t think they would be for me but now I’m kind of obsessed – especially with the Mary Jane and square toe iterations that have modernized this trend. I recently styled a pair with a cuffed jean and the combination was truly chef’s kiss.
Because ballet flats were so popular in the early 2000s, they are all over secondhand apps so I suggest starting there if you are a skeptic like I was.
Mary Janes and ballet flats started showing up in winter of 2023 and will not only continue into the spring but also into the summer. They have been synonymous with a loafer in my wardrobe, being able to be paired with jeans, trousers, skirts, and dresses, and act as a more feminine touch to my personally tomgirl style.
There are so many different styles on the market so selecting the one that will most emulate your ideal style will be dependent on your style language.
For example, if you lean towards edgier pieces, these Jeffrey Campbells are amazing and are very similar to the Miu Miu ballet flats that helped popularize this trend. I love the juxtaposition between the structured, almost pointe ballet shoe style mixed with the leather straps and silver hardware.
If you are a chic minimalist, these square toe leather ballet flats with the simple Mary Jane style strap from Reformation will easily fit into your long-term wardrobe (and come in a bunch of different colors).
If you love feminine silhouettes and sparkle, these cream studded flats from Madewell are sure to pair nicely with floaty dresses and skirts.
3. Denim on Denim
Canadian tuxedos – you either love or hate them.
I’m a lover for many reasons. I personally feel that denim on denim looks so effortlessly chic and is a great example of a casual outfit that is appropriate for a wide range of spring outings.
Denim on denim has been a trend for some time, but this season we’re seeing the traditional denim jacket and matching jean ensemble take on various silhouettes.
This skirt and vest combo from Aritzia is perfect for a festival or your next European vacation. Pair with a sambas or motorcycle boots for a cool casual look or opt for a strappy mule or studded ballet flat for something more feminine.
4. Suiting
A little more narrow in terms of style language, but timeless nonetheless.
A blazer is a piece I recommend in most of my clients’ wardrobes. The cut will be dependent on your own personal style of course but it is a piece that you can throw on over a simple jeans and tee casual look to something even more casual like a luxe sweat set.
If you have been following me on TikTok and Instagram then you know I fell in love with waistcoats and vests last fall. They are the simplest way to add dimension to an outfit, whether that’s a dress, graphic tee, or plain white tee, and can be even worn on their own. From there, you can dress them up with a matching pant and ballet flat or dress them down with some longline shorts and sneakers.
On the topic of suiting and waistcoats, I also want to mention another spring trend: tunics, specifically waistcoat style tunics. I always felt tunics were too conservative but this season I am really gravitating towards them.
They are sophisticated on their own, and will last beyond their season because of that along with their versatility.
For example, pair this tunic from Abercrombie with some sambas and a pair of light wash denim with a distressed hem for something more casual. Or style it with a satin midi skirt and ballet flats for something more polished.
5. Brown
Brown is the new black and specifically in terms of leather. Yes, a black leather jacket is timeless and will forever be a closet staple. I wear my black leather bomber nearly every day but lately I have been seeing brown leather jackets of various silhouettes coming into the playing field.
This a great trend to thrift as worn brown leather gives character to a traditional leather jacket. Silhouettes like bombers, aviators, blazers, and coaches jacket have been everywhere and I love the softness the brown gives over black – but don’t get it twisted, a brown leather jacket may become timeless but will never fully replace a black leather jacket.
Outside of leather jackets, brown has taken various shapes from simple tops and tee to boots, bags, and loafers.
This brown leather jacket from Princess Polly is a great high street option but Ebay, Depop, and Poshmark will be your besties for finding a secondhand beauty and trust me they have some amazing picks!
